Both crowns and majority of bridges are fixed prosthetic components. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, which can be taken out and cleaned daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto your existing teeth or implants.

A crown is generally used to cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can also be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. Alternatively a crown can be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for better functionality.

A bridge may be recommended if you have a missing tooth or teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and further joint disorders. A dental bridge is a great way to prevent these situations.

Before applying a crown or a bridge, the tooth is prepared in size to allow the crown or bridge to fit over it snugly.

We then take an impression of your existing teeth, and work on providing an exact colour matching mould for the crown or bridge treatment.

This impression is then used by a dental lab, to make your crown or bridge, in the choice of material. A temporary crown or bridge will be used, while the permanent crown or bridge is being prepared. Once the permanent crown or bridge has been prepared, the temporary crown or bridge is removed, and replaced with your permanent new crown or bridge.

While crowns and bridges can last a lifetime, in some instances they can become loose or fall out. Practising consistent good oral hygiene is the most important step you can take to ensure the longevity of your crown or bridge.

Keep your gums and teeth healthy by brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. It is also advised to get regular  check-ups and professional dental hygienist cleaning.
